The “New Writers Program” is a development program for emerging writers which forms part of the Visual Research Program, an ongoing partnership between the MCA Australia and The Power Institute that aims to explore new ways of conducting research on contemporary art and visual culture. This year, the New Writers Program will be responding to MCA Australia’s exhibition Primavera 2026: Young Australian Artists.
The 2026 cohort comprises of eight current students and recent graduates of the University of Sydney, mentored by curator Antares Wells (MCA Australia) and writer Nick Croggon (The Power Institute). The program includes a series of events from June to September 2026, including artist talks, writing workshops, reading groups and studio visits.

Participants will produce a short piece of writing connected to the exhibition, on a work, artist or research question of their choosing, and present their piece at a public event at the MCA Australia. The cohort’s writing will also be published on the Visual Research Program website.

YOUNG AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS
Since 1992, Primavera: Young Australian Artists has featured the work of over 250 artists and 30 curators and launched the careers of many of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists. Each year, the curator of Primavera undertakes extensive research, visiting artists' studios across the country to develop the exhibition.
